Starting your journey as a Trainee Solicitor is exciting, challenging, and full of opportunities for growth, both professionally and personally. At Thrive, we’re proud to do things a little differently. From our focus on mental health and wellbeing, to our open culture and flexible working.
Unfortunately, not all law firms are the same, so as one of Thrive’s Trainee Solicitors, I wanted to share a few insights, reflections, and practical tips for anyone starting out in their legal journey or considering it in the future, but feel free to read through even if you’re not either of those!
- Wellbeing Comes First (that’s not just a tagline)
The legal profession has a reputation for long hours, high stress, and little sleep. Luckily, Thrive challenges that norm so wellbeing isn’t an afterthought; it’s part of how we work every day.
Tip: Find small, sustainable ways to look after yourself daily. That might mean taking a proper lunch break, going for a quick walk between client calls, or taking 5-10 minutes to reset your mind. The more you look after yourself, the better you’ll perform.
- Ask Questions (lots of them!)
You’re not expected to know everything as a Trainee. The best way to learn is by asking questions, seeking feedback, and being curious. As hard as it can be sometimes to take constructive feedback, you will always remember it for certain reasons; which is all the more reason to take a positive spin on it and use it to spur you on.
Tip: Keep a running list of questions as you work on a task/project, then ask your supervisor at an appropriate time (or include it as a comment in your draft document). It helps you stay proactive and engaged without interrupting workflow. You’re also likely to remember the answer more if you ask targeted questions, rather than
- Organisation is Key (but flexibility helps too)
Juggling client work, deadlines, and professional development can feel overwhelming at first. That’s why it’s important to manage your time in a way that works best for you, whether that’s working from home, in the office, or a mix of both (provided your firm allows hybrid or smart working!)
Tip: Use digital tools to stay organised, from shared electronic task boards like Asana, to calendar reminders. But also remember to stay flexible; things can change quickly in legal practice, and adaptability is just as valuable as planning your time.
- Connect With Your Team
Even in a hybrid world, connection matters. The Thrive Tribe makes a conscious effort to stay connected through regular check-ins, virtual coffees, and team days. It makes a big difference knowing you’re part of a supportive, tight-knit team who genuinely want you to succeed.
Tip: Don’t wait for others to reach out, take initiative to check in with colleagues, ask about their projects, and celebrate wins together.
Final Thoughts: Do it For You
Being a Trainee Solicitor is a learning curve; there will be challenges, mistakes, and moments of doubt, but it’s about finding your own rhythm, developing your voice, and learning to thrive in your career.
Life will never be straightforward, so finding what you’re passionate about is key to getting you through. Align your work with what motivates you. When your personal values connect with your firm’s purpose, your work feels more meaningful and rewarding.
If you’re just starting out in law, remember this: success isn’t measured by how many hours you bill, but by how fulfilled, balanced, and confident you feel in what you do.
So, take a deep breath (or two!), stay curious, and keep moving forward.
