Introduction
With racism, anti-trans rhetoric, and divisive language spreading rapidly in society and online, many of us are feeling the impact in our day-to-day lives and workplaces. This climate can make people feel unsafe, unseen, or unable to fully be themselves at work.
But within our teams, there are things we can do to support one another and create environments that feel safe and inclusive.
Recognising the Impact
- Some colleagues may feel more vulnerable, anxious, or hesitant to travel or attend events.
- Social media can magnify harmful messages, making it harder to “switch off.”
- When discriminatory behaviour goes unchallenged, it undermines trust and belonging.
What Employees Can Do
1: Call Out Harmful Behaviour
- If you feel safe to do so, speak up when you see or hear something that doesn’t align with your organisation’s values.
- If not, use reporting channels or speak to a trusted manager.
2: Practice Micro-Affirmations
- Small, positive actions, like recognising contributions, listening without judgement, and using inclusive language, can counterbalance microaggressions.
3: Look Out for Each Other
- Notice when colleagues seem uncomfortable or excluded.
- Check in with them privately and offer support.
4: Understand Psychological Safety
- Everyone has a role in creating an environment where people feel safe to speak up without fear of ridicule or retaliation.
5: Know Your Policies and Rights
- Familiarise yourself with anti-harassment and reporting processes.
- Trust that your employer should take these issues seriously; if they don’t, raise it further.
Closing Message
We can’t eliminate the rise of harmful rhetoric online, but we can protect what’s within our control: our workplace culture. By looking out for each other, calling out discrimination, and showing compassion, we can create spaces where everyone feels valued and safe.
At Thrive Law, we support employees and organisations to navigate these challenges by:
- Building inclusive workplaces.
- Providing training on bias, banter, and microaggressions.
- Supporting with anonymous reporting processes.
- Coaching and guidance on sensitive topics with wellbeing in mind.
