World Suicide Prevention Day – How You Can Make a Difference

Thrive Thoughts

Every year on 10 September, we come together to observe World Suicide Prevention Day, supported by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organisation.

This day serves as a powerful reminder that that small acts of kindness, connection, and awareness can save lives. Despite progress, stigma around mental health and suicide persists. Leaving many to suffer in silence, fearful of judgment or misunderstanding. But research reminds us that talking openly about suicide can offer relief, understanding, and hope.

By amplifying open, stigma-free conversations and sharing practical support tools, we can turn a global day of awareness into lasting change in our communities.

Five Practical Ways to Make a Difference

Ask, Listen, and Validate: If someone seems withdrawn, overwhelmed, or different, take a moment to ask gently, how they are doing and offer support and a safe space to talk. Listening without judgment and showing you care can make a profound difference.

Learn the Warning Signs and Resources: Many mental health crises go unnoticed. Educating yourself about the signs, changes in behaviour and knowing where to find help equips you to act meaningfully.

Promote Mental Health First Aid Training: Equipping people with the skills to recognise, approach, and support someone in distress can be life-saving.

Take Care of Yourself: Helping others starts with looking after your own mental wellbeing. Allow space for connection, rest, and the support you need and encourage others to do the same
