Let’s be honest, the legal profession isn’t exactly known for its relaxed pace. The “always-on” culture is real, the workloads are demanding, and for many people, burnout isn’t a distant risk. It’s something they’re already quietly living with.
We’ve all had that week where the to-do list felt longer at the end of the day than it did at the start. Where the coffee stops helping and the screen starts blurring. Where you’re present in the office, but not really there.
At Thrive, we believe wellbeing shouldn’t be reactive, a week off offered only once someone has already hit a wall. It needs to be woven into the everyday. And that starts with asking better questions, building better habits, and creating a culture where people feel genuinely safe to say, “I’m not okay today.”
What Does Good Mental Wellbeing Actually Look Like at Work?
In an ideal world, everyone would feel great all the time. But we’re human. We have off days, stressful periods, moments where we need support, and that’s completely normal.
Good mental wellbeing at work doesn’t mean everyone is always happy. It means people feel able to be honest about how they’re doing. It means having the right support structures in place before things escalate. And it means recognising that what works for one person might not work for another.
Whether that’s a quick chat with a colleague, a proper lunch break away from your desk, or accessing professional support through an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), it all counts.
How We’re Putting This Into Practice at Thrive
We’re not perfect, but we are intentional. Here’s what we’re doing to make sure wellbeing is more than just a poster on the wall.
Protecting Focus, Not Just Hours
A long day isn’t the same as a productive day. We’re actively encouraging boundaries around working hours, including a ‘no email after hours’ policy, alongside flexible and hybrid working options that give people genuine autonomy over how they work best. Because protecting your energy protects your output.
Moving Beyond “How Are You?”
Office snacks and Friday socials are great, and we’re not giving those up anytime soon. But real wellbeing runs deeper than that. We’re shifting our everyday check-ins from “How’s it going?” to “How’s your workload today, is there anything I can help you reprioritise?” It’s a small change in language, but it opens up a very different kind of conversation.
No Stigma. Full Stop.
Looking after your mental health isn’t just an HR initiative, it’s a team effort. Whether you’re a Partner, a Senior Associate, a Trainee, or anywhere in between, your wellbeing matters here. We’re in the business of solving problems for our clients. We want to apply the same care and rigour to the people on our own team.
5 Simple Ways to Support Your Wellbeing Right Now
You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul to feel better at work. Small, consistent habits make a real difference. Here are five to try:
- Take your breaks properly. Step away from your screen, even for ten minutes. A short walk, some fresh air, or just a change of scenery can reset your focus more effectively than powering through.
- Set clear boundaries around your time. Decide when you’re ‘off’ and stick to it. Whether that’s not checking emails after 6pm or keeping your lunch break sacred, protecting your time is not selfish, it’s sustainable.
- Try gratitude journaling. It sounds simple because it is. Jotting down three things you’re grateful for at the end of the day can genuinely shift your mindset over time. Give it a week and see how it feels.
- Use box breathing before stressful moments. Feeling that pre-meeting spike of anxiety? Try this: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat a few times. It genuinely works to calm your nervous system and help you walk in feeling grounded.
- Talk to your colleagues. We’re a small team, but a strong one. Don’t underestimate the value of a honest conversation. Sharing what’s on your mind, even briefly, can make a real difference.
The Culture Is Changing, Let’s Keep It Moving
We’re not robots. We’re people doing important work, and we do our best work when we’re at our best. That’s not a nice-to-have, it’s a business reality.
The legal profession’s relationship with mental health is shifting. It won’t change overnight, but it changes with every honest conversation, every boundary respected, every check-in that goes beyond the surface. At Thrive, we’re committed to being part of that change.
Your wellbeing isn’t an afterthought here. It’s the foundation.
