Empowering Women, Breaking Barriers: The Significance of International Women’s Day

Women Empowerment

International Women’s Day is more than just a celebration—it’s a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and contributions of women across the globe. It’s a day to recognise the progress we’ve made toward gender equality, while also acknowledging the challenges that remain.

For me, as a female founder in the legal sector, this day is particularly significant. It serves as a reflection on the barriers women continue to face in male-dominated industries, but also as a rallying cry to keep pushing forward. Representation, equality, and opportunity for women in all workplaces shouldn’t be a privilege—it should be the norm.

While International Women’s Day is a time for recognition, it’s also a time for action. It’s about ensuring that progress isn’t just measured by words, but by real, tangible change. Women continue to be underrepresented in leadership roles, underpaid in comparison to male counterparts, and often overlooked for opportunities. That’s why this day exists—not just to highlight achievements, but to demand more.

At Thrive Law, we are proud to be a firm where women lead, thrive, and inspire one another. The voices of the women in our team reflect the significance of this day and what it means to them:

Ashmina Raghwani: “International Women’s Day reminds me that women can achieve anything they set their minds to—we are strong, independent, and breaking barriers. It’s a day to celebrate the unique strengths and perspectives that women bring to every field. I am a huge advocate for women supporting one another, creating an environment where we can all become the best version of ourselves.”

Crystal Boyde: “IWD holds huge significance for me; as both a mum and a solicitor, it reminds me of the progress that has been made towards gender equality but also of the work still needed to break down barriers. It’s about creating environments where all women, regardless of background, can thrive and be heard at every stage of their lives.”

Katie Elvidge: “IWD is really important to me because it gives us the opportunity to recognise and celebrate all of the achievements we have made and what is yet to come. As a society, we all still have a lot to learn about creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for women in law.”

Roshni Punja: “International Women’s Day is a moment to reflect on the incredible strength and spirit women display every day. It highlights our ability to break barriers, not just for ourselves, but for future generations. It’s about celebrating our unique contributions and supporting one another to achieve our fullest potential.”

Annabelle Oliver: “IWD is a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women. It is a day to look at the progress we’ve made toward gender equality and the work still left to do. Most importantly, it’s about raising our voices, uplifting one another, and striving for a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive.”

Millie Creber: “For me, IWD is about looking at how far we’ve come while recognising how much more still needs to be done. It’s about acknowledging the challenges that remain—like pay gaps, underrepresentation, and unequal opportunities. It’s more than just a day of celebration; it’s a reminder to keep pushing for real change.”

Emma Peckover: “IWD is a celebration of women’s achievements—honouring the strength, resilience, and contributions of women who inspire me. But it’s also a reminder that there’s still work to do for gender equality: equal pay, safe communities, and equal opportunities. Above all, it’s a day to empower and uplift each other, accelerating action together toward a more equal future.”

Hearing these voices from our team reminds me why International Women’s Day is so essential. It is not just a day to reflect; it is a day to act. Every organisation, every leader, every individual has a role to play in advancing gender equality.

So, as we celebrate this day, I encourage businesses to think beyond token gestures. Are you truly supporting women in your workplace? Are you mentoring, sponsoring, and championing female talent? Are you addressing the gender pay gap and ensuring women have equal opportunities for leadership?

Change requires action. Real progress happens when we commit to making workplaces more inclusive, more equitable, and more accessible for women at every stage of their careers.

International Women’s Day isn’t just about celebrating women—it’s about making sure the next generation doesn’t have to fight for the opportunities they deserve. Let’s make this a turning point for real change.

For those looking for ways to create a more inclusive workplace, Thrive Law is here to support you. Let’s not just celebrate women today—let’s ensure they thrive every day.
